Vernal Equnox and the New Moon in Aries: New Beginnings

Words are provocative. When we look beyond our assumptions about their meaning they are like tiny mysterious states of grace hidden within language.  We use words both to invoke and evoke; whether we are simply sharing our experiences or describing our dreams language helps us call things into being.  How we use words, both in speaking to ourselves and others. is the core of how we shape our world.

The sign Aries, the Vernal Equinox, and a New Moon are all about beginnings and initiations.

If we were speaking latin we would say ab ovum, literally "from the egg.”  In English, the word begin has extraordinary roots.  The prefix, be- "about, around, on all sides” + ginnan, which is of obscure etymology and found only in compounds, perhaps "to open, open up.” ( from etymology.com compare Old High German in-ginnan "to cut open, open up," also "begin, undertake”).

See what I mean?  Thought-provoking. To begin something is to open it. This is the essence of Aries (the other cardinal signs as well: Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn all begin things), it represents the primordial seed. And this year, at precisely 1:23 p.m. EST/10:23 a.m. PST, the New Moon in Aries aligns with the Vernal Equinox urging us to open.

Aries is a fire sign and fire signs are different expressions of the creative force dwelling within all of us.  In Aries, it literally bursts forth into being.   It is the seed, ab ovum, the egg.

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac and represents the seed.  The pulse of life. The origin point.  It is aligned with the number one which is a magical number that when divided or multiplied by itself is still itself.  So in essence, one of the opportunities of this gorgeous time is to delve into your relationship with yourself which colors the core perception of everything you experience.  What is your relationship with yourself like?  Where are you impatient?  Where are you kind?  The Moon, and this is a New Moon,  is always, always asking us to nurture our essence, our heart.

This is a seeding time.   Full of promise, containing life force that has not yet been fully birthed. So, to most fully harness the energy of this New Moon/Vernal Equinox,  the question at hand  (notice that the word quest is the root of the word question)  is what do you want to seed in the upcoming months?  Furthermore, what do you then want to cultivate and nurture at the next New Moon in Taurus?  One thing leads to another throughout the journey of the year, even if we were just looking at the journey of the cardinal points, the final sign, Capricorn,  is able to fully manifest something of worth out of everything it has been nourishing since its inception in Aries.

Where you choose, consciously or unconsciously, to put your energy and attention creates the shape of your life.  It is a powerful force that we all too readily forget or get distracted from in what can feel like the unrelenting pace of the daily details and tasks of life.

The planet Mars rules the sign of Aries, directing us to connect to our passions and to go out and actively hunt for what we desire.  Nike’s tagline persistently is arising in my consciousness as I write this: Just do it!  It’s perfect.  Where we have Aries in our individual charts we are in essence being asked to just do it, take the quest, and fight for what is ours. To take our rightful place in the world.

Consider this New Moon a portal of new beginnings. An invitation to be born anew.  Whether it is a long cherished dream or some newly arisen inspiration, use this energy to kick start a journey down a new path.  Baptism by fire. The fire of imagination and possibility.

Remember showing up consistently with your attention is a devotional act.  And if anything in your life deserves such fealty, the same allegiance that the Knights Templar exhibited in their quest for the Holy Grail, it is what you seed during this potent New Moon/ Vernal Equinox.

Happy New Beginnings!
