New Moon in Taurus: Permission

I have found myself contemplating permission recently. The permission we give ourselves, and more significantly, where or how, for whatever reason, we don’t. We all have an unconscious barrier, sort of like invisible dog fencing. Somehow, we have become trained not to go across that boundary, so much so that we most often don’t even question it. It’s just what is within our lives.
Currently, for the first time in 2025, all the planetary bodies are moving forward, and Mercury, known as the Guide of Souls, has begun to speed up, symbolically giving all of us signs of our path ahead if we only pay attention. In fact, now through May 29th, Mercury is building in speed, moving all of our stories forward.
But to head down a new path, or sometimes simply make a turn, we need to give ourselves permission to be permissive with ourselves. We have to allow ourselves to pass through.
That’s the opportunity at this New Moon in Taurus. The singular New Moon this year that takes place while everything is in forward motion, charged by a fierce aspect to Mars in Leo, is potentially a game-changer. In many ways, this is the loveliest New Moon of 2025.
Taurus the bull, a sign ruled by Venus (which has also just gone direct in her exaltation sign of Pisces and is gaining speed), calls us to fertilize our desires. This is the height of the spring season; everything is blooming, and this New Moon captures that potent energy.
Harnessing the energy of this New Moon begins with listening, with watching, and with being present to the signs around you. The universe is constantly singing to us, leaving Easter Eggs throughout our day. We simply have to learn to be aware and tune in.
What we don’t need to do is rush. There is a stillness to Taurus; it likes to take its time, and it is known for becoming the original immovable object when it experiences being pushed. Be still and listen. Connect to source.
In my classes, I regularly assign homework that asks my students to take note of the signs they see during the week. Inevitably, at least one student reports that they don’t ever get signs. It always reminds me of the scene with Jim Carrey in the original Bruce Almighty, where he asks for a sign and remains oblivious, even when a truck full of signs pulls directly in front of him. (To view the scene, please click here.)
So take your time during this New Moon. While it is exact on Sunday at 12:31 pm PDT/3:31 pm EDT, its energy carries (the lunar cycle)forward for another three days. Ground your intentions prior to setting them. Do something pleasurable; take a luxurious bath, get a massage, walk in nature, savor a great meal. That’s actually the perfect word for this lunation: Savor.
Taurus is a sensual sign, it loves embodiment. It loves to feel. Which is why it loves to move slowly; it is enjoying the moment.
When we slow down, we actually cultivate and build our energy. From there, we can more easily not only let it blossom but also revel in it. We can appreciate it
The etymology of the word permissive comes from the Latin permissivus, "to let go, let pass, let loose.” We have to experience a certain amount of safety to give ourselves permission. To let ourselves relax and not worry about the unwritten rules. As I said earlier, Mercury is building in speed through May 29. Of all of the planetary archetypes, Mercury is the God who couldn’t care less about the rules. From the morning of his birth, when he was born at dawn, he made up his own rules as he went along.
2025 is a year of change, which takes root in 2026, but it started off slowly. Mars was retrograde as the year began, and finally will be out of its shadow period on May 2. Venus also retrograded, leaving its shadow on May 16. Early this morning, April 26, Mercury left its shadow period. Everything is going to begin to move, to speed up, now.
Through the end of May (even after Pluto retrogrades on May 4th), drop into the flow of forward movement. Throw out the rule book. Be alert for messages, signs along the path. Use the luscious energy of tomorrow’s New Moon in Taurus to cultivate an embodied sense of your desires and hold that energy, welcoming it so that the seeds of your desire can flower in the months ahead.
